Introduction to SEO

Search engine optimization or SEO is a process of improving the visibility of a website in search engine result pages (SERPs). The process of SEO can be carried out in two ways:

  1. On-Page Optimization: Optimization within a website is mainly done to facilitate the crawling process and improve the page's visibility. This includes optimizing titles, Meta descriptions, keywords, images, and more.
  2. Off-Page Optimization: Optimization performed outside of a website such as link-building, directory submission, online business listings, bookmarking, etc., aims to improve the ranking of a website in SERPs.

How Does a Search Engine Work?

Before diving into SEO, it is essential to understand how search engines work to deliver accurate results to users from their vast databases. The foremost goal of search engines is to provide relevant and authoritative content to users. Content relevancy is determined by how it is written, implemented in code, and linked. On the other hand, content authority is assessed by the quality of links, references, reviews, and other factors.

The process by which search engines deliver results to their users is a 3-step process:

  1. Crawling: A web page is scanned or crawled by computer programs called "bots", "spiders", or "crawlers".
  2. Caching: A snapshot or a cache is stored by search engines.
  3. Indexing: The stored webpage is then retrieved by search engines relevant to the user's search query.

This whole process of indexing by search engines, according to the relevancy and authority of the content, is governed by a complex set of computer programs known as "algorithms". These algorithms are used to rank and return the web pages to the users.

Structure of Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs)

When it comes to search engine result pages (SERPs), understanding their structure is vital for optimizing your online presence effectively. A typical search engine result page will look like this -

Structure of Search Engine Result Page (SERP)

  1. Paid Listings: These are advertisements. Advertisers bid on specific keyword searches through advertising programs like Google Ads, and their ads are displayed on SERPs labeled as "ads".
  2. Organic / Natural Results: These are natural results, displayed on search results, according to the relevancy and authority of the content.
  3. Featured Snippet: Special type of search results displayed prominently at the top of some SERPs, appearing in a box-like format and extracted directly from the content of a web page suited most relevant to the search query.
  4. Rich Media: Interactive and visually engaging content such as videos, images, maps, carousels, and more, displayed on search results.

Search engines display the relevant content on their search engine results page in the form of a short summary, known as a "snippet". A typical snippet consists of a headline, description, and a visible URL. The purpose of the snippet is to assist users in determining the relevancy of the content.

Keyword Research in SEO

Keyword research is the process, which is to identify the keywords, users use in their search queries and then optimizing the website to appear on SERPs for that specific keyword. The keyword is targeted based on relevance, search volume, and competition. The step-by-step process of keyword research is given below:

  1. Make a list of your keywords: Find keywords based on your products and services and list out phrases by putting yourself into the mindset of a customer. Look out for long tail keywords, which may have low search volume but are extremely relevant, and less competitive. After compiling your list of keywords, categorize them into groups based on relevancy, popularity, search volume, competition, or any other criteria you find appropriate. Some popular keyword research tools include Search Console, Google Trends, Answer the Public, and Moz Keyword Explorer.
  2. Analyzing SEO Keywords: Keyword analysis tools not only provide keyword suggestions but also help identify the relevancy score, monthly search volume, and other relevant data based on the specific tool you are using. For example, when using Moz Keyword Explorer, after selecting our desired keyword, we can examine the competition in the keyword overview section. This section offers valuable insights such as estimated search volume, difficulty level, organic CTR, and priority scale, making it easier to choose the optimal keyword for SEO.
  3. Keyword Distribution: Keyword distribution involves the strategic assignment of keywords to specific pages on your website. Begin by listing out the current pages of your website and then match the relevant keywords from your list to each respective page. Remember to use only one keyword per page and ensure its natural integration. Additionally, identify areas within the content where the keywords must be naturally included. To further optimize your pages, you can utilize Moz's on-page grader tool, which provides valuable suggestions to enhance your page's performance.

  2. Title: Short with a character limit of 55 to 60, relevant and descriptive, use keywords, and be free of mistakes.
  3. Meta Description: Character limit of 155 to 160, use keywords, and be mistake-free. It helps to improve CTR (Click-Through-Rate).
  4. h1 Tag: It denotes the major heading of the content. It should only be used once. Include keywords and the word limit is 7 to 8 words. It should be concise and relevant.
  5. Image: Name the image file with the keyword separating each word with a hyphen and ending with the image type. The alt tag of the image should be descriptive and includes the keyword.
  6. Video / Audio: Name the video or audio file with the keyword. Provide a description and include the keyword.
  7. Links: Provide proper linking within the website. always link the sub-pages with the primary page of the website.

Introduction to Technical SEO

Technical SEO involves optimizing a website from a technical perspective to enhance its search engine visibility and overall performance. In contrast, to on-page SEO, which centers around content optimization and user experience, technical SEO concentrates on the backend elements utilized by search engines for crawling, indexing, and ranking websites.

Here are some important aspects of technical SEO:

  1. Sitemaps: A sitemap is a website map that helps search engines find and understand its content. There are two types of sitemaps - "XML sitemaps" and "HTML sitemaps". Submitting an XML sitemap to the search console makes the crawling process faster for the search engines.
  2. Robots.txt: It is a text file consisting of a set of instructions that inform bots which part of the website they are allowed to access and crawl. This can help avoid content duplication, reduce server load, and maintain privacy for certain sections of the website.
  3. SSL & HTTPS: Using an SSL certificate and HTTPS encryption is crucial for both security and SEO, as search engines often prioritize secure websites.
  4. Canonical URLs: If the search engine encounters two URLs containing the same content, it will divide the authority between them leading to a negative impact on SEO. To address this problem a canonical tag is employed to assist search engines in determining the preferred URL to consider.
  5. Redirect: It is used when moving content from one URL to another. There are two types of redirects: the "302 redirect", which is short-term and temporary, and the "301 redirect", which is long-term and permanent. Redirects are used in SEO for preserving ranking and avoid broken links.
  6. Schema Markup: Schema markup also known as structured data, is a small piece of code inserted into the root of a website. Its purpose is to add extra information to the web content, enabling search engines to display more informative and visually appealing results, often in the form of rich media to users. Currently, 800 types of schemas are mapped out today from which JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) is the recommended method.

Core Web Vitals: The Performance Metrics for Websites in SEO

Core web vitals are essential for SEO because they directly impact how well a website ranks in Google's search results. The core web vitals consist of three metrics:

  1. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): The amount of time a page takes to render its largest content visible on screen.
  2. First Input Delay (FID): It's the time it takes for the user to first interact with your page, such as clicking or tabbing.
  3. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): It shows how many different components in your page's layout shift around when users try to interact.

These core web vitals metrics can be found in various online SEO tools, including Search Console, Page Speed Insights, GTmetrix, and others. When we examine the core web vitals report in the Page Speed Insight tool, we will find that it provides data for both mobile and desktop views. Each section offers two types of reports: Field Data and Lab Data. Field Data represents the actual interactions of users with the page and is used for ranking purposes, while Lab Data provides diagnostics and suggestions for page optimization.

Creating and Managing SEO-Oriented Content

Creating SEO-oriented content is vital for driving organic traffic, connecting with your target audience, and establishing your website's authority in the digital landscape. Let's delve into some effective practices for creating SEO-oriented content that can help drive traffic to your website:

  1. Define business goals and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).
  2. Understand your audience. Use customer personas.
  3. Create a calendar to schedule your SEO-related activities.
  4. Leverage different content types (videos, podcasts, blog posts, articles, etc.)
  5. Reuse existing content.
  6. Avoid black hat SEO techniques such as keyword stuffing, link spamming, etc.
  7. Avoid spelling and grammar mistakes.
  8. Measuring results.

Link-Building: The Pillar of Effective SEO Strategy

Link-building in SEO refers to the process of acquiring hyperlinks from other websites to your own site. These inbound links play a crucial role in enhancing your website's credibility and authority. However, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of link quality over link quantity. Low-quality spammy links can potentially damage your site's reputation in search engines.

There are mainly two types of links: "internal links", which are used to link pages within a website, and "external links", which are used to link a website to another website. Internal links are further divided into "navigation links" and "contextual links". Navigation links are used to make the navigation process easy within a website, whereas contextual links are present in the body of the content to link to a specific term on a page on the website to provide more in-depth information related to that term. External links can be acquired through directory submissions, online business listing submissions, social sharing, or acquiring links from other authoritative websites.
